This page is for the 2011-2012 series of Mattel's 1:55 scale die-cast models of the Cars 2 film.
In May 2011, Mattel began releasing 1:55-scale die-cast models of characters from the Disney/Pixar film Cars 2. In May 2017, many of the cars were replaced by the Cars 3 Die-Cast Line.
History[]
In 2010, being the year before Cars 2’s release, introduced the Final Lap collection. It was branded as your last chance to get characters from the first movie before the Cars 2 toy line started. The lenticular die-casts also became a lot more common this year, now with the characters’ eyes looking different directions. Many fans disliked these as the lenticular effect made it look like the cars had more than two eyes at some angles. No new lenticular die-casts were released after 2010. This year also introduced the Cars Toons sub-line. A line of die-casts based off of the Mater’s Tall Tales shorts. A lot of die-casts were unfortunately canceled this year to make way for next year’s toy line based off of Cars 2.
In 2011, to coincide with Cars 2’s releases, the line started exclusively producing characters and variants from the second movie. Right off the bat, they produced characters both major and minor. Some special character variants that were never seen in the movie were released this year, including die-casts with silver and metallic finishes. This year also introduced Super Chases, which were die-casts produced in limited quantities. To this day, no Super Chases have been re-released.
On June 25, 2011, Kmart stores all over the USA held the 6th Cars Collector's Event where a number of Cars 2 characters were released in a new format. These new releases were World Grand Prix Racers with synthetic rubber tires in special packaging, along with a number of die-cast vehicles from Cars and non-synthetic rubber tire vehicles.
Mattel made this exclusive item for the D23 Expo event held in Anaheim, CA, on August 19-21, 2011. It is identical to the retail version, except for the packaging. It also came with 3 extra wheels in the box. Also included with this Finn was a "blue Ransburg" Finn McMissile packaged in a separate black envelope with the words "Top Secret" across the front, along with the Cars 2 logo.
On October 22, 2011, Kmart stores all over the USA held the 7th Cars Collector's Event where a number of Cars 2 characters were released in a new Kmart-exclusive format. These new releases were World Grand Prix Racers with synthetic rubber tires in special packaging.
On June 16, 2012, Kmart stores all over the USA held the 8th Cars Collector's Event where a number of Cars 2 characters were released in a new Kmart-exclusive format. These new releases were World Grand Prix Racers with a silver metallic finish in special packaging. Also released were two other Kmart exclusive non-racer vehicles, with one being a "Chase" vehicle.
On October 20, 2012, Kmart stores all over the USA held the 9th Cars Collector's Event. At it, most of the remaining World Grand Prix Racers, except Rip Clutchgoneski, were released with a silver metallic finish and special packaging.

Chase[]
In November 2011, Mattel unveiled a collection of brand new "Super Chase" prototypes as part of their From Silver Screen to Die-Cast: Disney-Pixar Cars Imagined by Mattel museum exhibit at the Petersen Automotive Museum. The "very special" releases were to be produced in even lower quantities than traditional Chase cars, capping at merely 4,000. The assorted characters were based on Cars 2 cameos made by celebrity drivers, each character having appeared in place of Jeff Gorvette in their respective country's version of the film. Also unlike usual Chases, while Super Chases were limited to one assortment number, they did not appear in every box manufactured - each release had a "duplicate" assortment, where they would be substituted with a different vehicle. The last of these however, Frosty, was distributed through a variety of unconventional means.

Micro Drifters[]
The Micro Drifters was a toy line made by Mattel that consisted of small plastic cars and planes with a tiny metal ball on their undercarriage that was used for them to "drift". The Micro Drifters were introduced following the release of Cars 2 in theaters and focused on releasing characters from that movie and also from the first Cars movie. It served as a secondary toy line to the 1:55 Scale Die-Casts from 2012 to 2015.

Others[]
2012 Easter Egg "Holiday Edition" Cars[]
The Holiday Edition or Holiday Special! series is a variety of die-cast assortments within Mattel’s Disney Pixar Cars brand. These models are/were typically sold with unique packaging, intended for holiday toy sections at stores.
Trivia[]
- Don Crumlin is arguably non-canon. He appeared to be Mattel's version of J. Curby Gremlin when he was released in the London Rescue 12-pack, although he did not appear in London at all.
- On the international card of Erik Laneley, the picture incorrectly depicts him of a Fiat 500, instead of a Honda Civic like he is. This error was fixed on the US releases and most other international releases, making the error card rare, until he was released in 2017 with the Fiat 500 picture.
- For some reason, Miguel Camino's diecast has a red spoiler, while his Disney Store diecast correctly has the black spoiler. As of 2025 it remains the inaccurate color.
- Rod "Torque" Redline has not been re-released in this line since 2012 for unknown reasons, it's likely to match with him being dead.
- Rod was going to receive a variant of his damaged diecast with a parking boot, but it got cancelled.
- The damaged diecast with a parking boot is not hard to create with actual pieces despite being cancelled. One will need is a damaged Rod "Torque" Redline diecast. Then you will need two of the parking boots from either impounded diecast character. The problem is that the boots are yellow as opposed to being grey.
- Jeff Gorvette's first die-cast didn't have the Corvette logo. This was corrected in his later die-cast releases, however, the Corvette logo would not be included again for his Cars 3 release.
- Rip Clutchgoneski's diecast version along with his crew chief Brian Gearlooski and his pittie Terrell Geartry took longer to be unlocked and created as a 1:55 Scale Diecast Car, and was the last of the World Grand Prix racers to collect a diecast in Cars 2.
- Most of his merchandise release colorings are also inaccurate as in the middle is shown be a bright yellowish-orange color instead of orange.
- However, the prototype of him for his launcher shows the corrected color and Mattel later on did make him orange for his Carbon Racers release but didn't do the same for his normal release afterwards.
- Rip is the only racer in the World Grand Prix not to have a crew chief, just a pit crew consisting of some pitties. However, he does gain a crew chief in the form of a 1:55 scale die-cast character only who did not appear in the film.
- Mattel selected and planned to make Rip Clutchgoneski as a silver racer along with Nigel Gearsley, Max Schnell, Lewis Hamilton and Miguel Camino in Cars 2, but unfortunately he was cancelled.
- Most of his merchandise release colorings are also inaccurate as in the middle is shown be a bright yellowish-orange color instead of orange.
- According to Frank Clutchenson's releases he appeared in Cars 2, watching the Tokyo, and Porto Corsa Race. It is unknown if he watched the London Race also.
- Shu Todoroki's diecast of the pit launchers and the rubber tires are shown to have a white bumper on him, although the revamp of him has a black bumper.
- The back of the Darrell Cartrip's die-cast toy reads DWstore.com which is a real website selling Darrell Waltrip-related merchandise such as T-shirts. Surprisingly enough, the inscription is visible on Darrell Cartrip himself in Cars 2, despite it being a real-world reference to Darrell Waltrip.
- For some reason, Professor Zündapp's die-cast model in the 1:55 scale line hasn't been released since 2012.
- On the packaging for Tyler Gremlin's die-cast version, his eyes are brown, but on the actual toy, they're blue-green.
- Acer appears in the playsets with Rod "Torque" Redline and then with Finn McMissile as a plastic toy without rolling (like two police officers from Japan two Kabuto's ninja in the Cars Toons playsets), but a black pacer appears in the Mega Mack Raceworld playset.
- On most of packaging of Fred Pacer's diecast, he is labeled as Fred Fisbowski. However on some, he is referred to as Fred Pacer instead.
- The die-cast version of the Double Decker Bus looks nothing like Topper Deckington III, since he is assigned to a different route number while Topper is assigned only to Killswitch.
- Miles Axlerod's promotional diecast has an angry expression, foreshadowing his true personality as the film's main antagonist.
- Because of no rear view shot with a readable license plate, Bindo's model and paintjob combination being seen so commonly seen in the film, and the fact that this diecast line didn't have any series, Bindo's exact appearance is unknown. Even Adam Roadriguez has a similar distinction as well.
- The die-cast of Carlo Maserati has blue-green eyes, but the image on the cardback has him with brown eyes.
- Karl Haulzemoff's Diecast was never released, possibly canceled for unknown reasons.
- The Ivan Mater die-cast was seen at the SDCC and the Petersen Automotive Museum in 2011 and 2012, that Variant was rarelly cancelled, but in 2013 was released.
- David Hobbscap's most common die-cast release in the 1:55 scale line is him with a headset however, there is a variant of him without it but it is very rare as it was exclusively released in a Target 7-pack and hasn't been re-released since.
- The die-cast version of Pope Pinion IV can be put in The Popemobile, like in the movie.
- In his Mattel Diecast, Pinion was not released with The Popemobile, but The Popemobile was released with a Pope Pinion IV card; in his Disney Store Diecast, they were released together, and also with Mater, Lightning McQueen, Luigi, Guido, Uncle Topolino, Francesco Bernoulli.
- Louis LaRue was planned to be released in 2012 with Mater, but it was cancelled. Later, he released in 2014.
- Leland Turbo die-cast was only released in the 2012 die-cast line in a two pack with Finn McMissile. There hasn't been a re-release of it since.
- Frosty Winterbumper's car-ified last name is Winterbumper, however, because of his Mattel die-cast not including his last name, many assumed his last name was Winterbottom.
- Frosty is the one of the two Super Chase racers from the 1:55 scale die-cast line to have variants. Ranging from a Silver Racers one, Neon Racers, Ice Racers and Carbon Racers variant.
- On Vitaly Petrov's first die-cast release he was just simply called "Russian Racer".
- This was possibly due to copyright issues at the time.
- He's the only other Super Chase racer that received a variant in the 1:55 scale die-cast line via the Ice Racers line.
- The other racer was Frosty Winterbumper who received multiple variants.
- Zen Master was named "Zen Master Pitty" and did not have a mustache for his 2-pack release with Mater. Later releases of the 2-pack corrected this.
- Sarge's Color Changers die-cast variant has the same facial expression as his original die-cast version for a few practical reasons related to how Mattel (the toy manufacturer) typically handles these release. Mattel used Sarge’s original face mold saves cost and production time, especially for secondary lines like Color Changers, where the focus is on the color transformation rather than new sculpt details.
- The Super Spy Attack Finn McMissile toy has the same facial expression as his unibody original die-cast version primarily due to design and manufacturing choices.
- In the Lightning McQueen Holiday Edition package, the photo shows the Hudson Hornet Piston Cup version, but when opened, the Lightning McQueen variant with racing tires is shown.
- Cars Super Chase Die-cast Collection: For the die-hard collector, a first look at Mattel’s ultra-exclusive 2012 line of die-cast cars that will feature one-time only, limited-run vehicles of very special Cars 2 characters. Display will include first Super Chase vehicle to launch – Flash – inspired by the real-life race car driver exclusively featured in the Swedish version of Cars 2.
- The Lightning McQueen Alive Showcase was a celebration of the innovative technology used to authentically bring the big personality of Lightning McQueen from the film screen into the playroom in miniature 1:55 scale. Product design highlights the cutting-edge micro-technology developed to create the life-like mouth, eye and shoulder movements of this little electronic vehicle that will be sure to top wish lists in the 2011 holiday season
