Rip Clutchgoneski is a race car from New Rearendia.

History[]

Cars 2[]

In Cars 2, Rip Clutchgoneski participated in all three World Grand Prix races, as well as in the Radiator Springs Grand Prix. Because of his modest origin from an unknown country and of his lack of titles, Rip can be considered the rookie of the competition. He didn't make a physical appearance until the Tokyo party where he and the other racers reacted in shock to Mater causing a scene. The first race in Tokyo was Rip's best performance. He started in 7th position, as the faster cars started at the back of the grid. Although in the first part of the race he was seen near the end of the pack, he gained places after the dirt section. He finally got up to the third position behind Lightning McQueen and Francesco Bernoulli, but then, had his motor blown out by the Lemons and was forced to quit the race, which he was one of the three cars that blew out during the race.

In the following races he stayed near or in the last position. Rip was recovered after the race in Tokyo and raced into 9th position in the Porto Corsa race in front of Jeff Gorvette and Lewis Hamilton. He was one of the last racers to crash in the huge pileup, at the same time as Raoul ÇaRoule. In the London race, Rip was seen in the last position. When the race starts in the Radiator Springs Grand Prix, Rip was pretty fast and raced into the 5th position. He was seen around the 4th or 7th position.

Other appearances[]

Rip appears in the Neon Racers book and takes part of the Neon race held by Shu Todoroki. In that book he says his only lines in the entire franchise, Which is "That climb looks intense, you can count me out. It's straight to Ginza for me!". He also appears in the Ice Racers book. Rip also appears in Cars Daredevil Garage via his die-cast, which is so far, his only game appearance in any form.

Creation and development[]

While not much information is available about Rip's overall development process, the Cars: Character Encyclopedia book states that Rip was supposed to die during the first World Grand Prix race in an earlier draft of Cars 2, hence his name Rip (for rest in peace) Clutchgoneski (for Clutch gone in the sky). However, this was changed to him only suffering a blown engine, allowing him to continue racing.

Jay Shuster, the character art director for the film, explained in a Q&A that Rip's design process (similar to Miguel Camino) began with reusing Francesco Bernoulli's model as a base, which he clarified was mainly due to budget constraints and this being a common practice with background characters.[1][2] To feature a more distinctive design, Rip’s shape was heavily modified with inspiration from other formula-style cars. This includes IndyCars, as Shuster added that they "borrowed IndyCar shapes of that era" (with concept art pointing to the Dallara IR-03/05), and, as evident from Rip's final design, F1-style road cars such as the Caparo T1, and the Hulme F1 Supercar. This leads to Rip not being based on or a direct copy of any car, but a generic formula race car blending elements from Formula 1, IndyCar, and F1-style road cars. Additionally, Shuster added that since Rip was a background character, and him being one of the racers whose engine blew early in the Japan race, not much time was spent developing his character or design.

In regards to the Hulme F1 Supercar, Hulme's developers reportedly saw this in an unfavorable light and found Rip so similar to their car, they considered making a legal action against Disney. Indeed, Rip's design does borrow many design cues from this car, including its distinctive air dams, wheel covers, similar boat-shaped central body, and identical spoiler. However, Rip does differ from the Hulme CanAm by several design elements (IndyCar-like cockpit and air intake, including wheels, suspension, and diffuser modified after Francesco's model, as he is an F1-inspired race car). Rip has the Hulme's characteristic orange color, and furthermore, concept art reveals he was first designed with black wheel covers, matching the Hulme car.

Bio and statistics[]

Cars 2[]

  • The former European colony and newly independent Republic of New Rearendia is desperate to put their name on the map – the #10 open-wheeled racer Rip Clutchgoneski is their best bet. After putting together a remarkable string of qualifying races, Rip’s entry into the World Grand Prix is clearly the Cinderella story of the competition. Though Rip credits luck for his chance on the international stage, it’s really skill and exuberance that brought the proud New Rearendian racer to the starting line.

Trivia[]

  • Based on an early concept art of the World Grand Prix Racers (one that featured Fabrizio as an original WGP Racer), the cyan IndyCar was most likely the earlier adaption of Rip Clutchgoneski. Furthermore, Rip's engine is a 3.5-liter DOHC V8 with 650 HP, which was used by Indy race cars from 2003 to 2011.
  • His Carbon Racer variant resembles a modified F3000 seen at modern Hill Climb events; specifically the Reynard 01L (K01) and Reynard K02. A few variations of the cars were given Formula E-like aero kits making them look like Rip Clutchgoneski although they don't have headlights and feature a wider spoiler.
  • The Formula 6000 Cup Series Rip competes in, as mentioned in the essential guide for Cars 2, is a fictional series. While while the exact racing series it was inspired after is unknown, there are similar real-life racing series such as Formula 3000 and Formula 5000. Additionally, there was also an obscure, short-lived racing series from 2002 called ChampCar F6000.
  • Rip is the only racer that races for a fictional country.
  • According to the Cars: Character Encyclopedia book, Rip was originally going to die during the first World Grand Prix race, hence his name Rip (for rest in peace) Clutchgoneski (for Clutch gone in the sky). However, his fate was changed so that he lived and only suffered a blown engine and was able to continue racing, because the film was rated "PG" not "R".
  • According to the essential guide for Cars 2, Rip's top speed is 240 mph/386 km/h while his official top speed is 199 mph/321 km/h. This may have been an attempt to match his top speed with actual IndyCars which can go over 230 to 240 mph on big ovals. The guidebook also claims that his hometown is simply Rearendia, although, it is actually Wheeli.
  • Rip and the other WGP racers, except for Jeff Gorvette, do not appear in "Cars 3" or "Cars On The Road" Season 1 due to the focus on new characters and storylines. However, they were likely busy with other activities during the events of Cars 3 and Cars on the Road Season 1.
  • For unknown reasons, Rip's WGP insignia shows his country's flag with colors in the opposite configuration (top left and bottom right section red instead of green) to all others flags and insignia appearing in the film.
  • Rip's diecast version along with his crew chief Brian Gearlooski and his pittie Terrell Geartry took longer to be unlocked and created as a 1:55 Scale Diecast Car, and was the last of the World Grand Prix racers to receive a diecast in Cars 2.
  • He is the only World Grand Prix racer for which no turntable video has been made.
  • He is also the only one, along with Lewis Hamilton not to appear in Cars 2: The Video Game.
  • Rip's fenders on his die-cast model are bigger than in the movie.
  • There is no dub where Rip replaces Jeff Gorvette since his country is fictional.
  • Based on Q&A's with Jay Shuster, Rip Clutchgoneski and Miguel Camino are the only WGP racers who reused an exsisting character model as a basis for their designs, primarily due to budget concerns (Francesco's model for Rip, and Jeff's model for Miguel). However, they were heavily modified using different cars for inspiration so they weren't clones.
  • Most of his merchandise release colorings are also inaccurate as in the middle is shown be a bright yellowish-orange color instead of orange.
    • However, the prototype of him for his launcher shows the corrected color and Mattel later on did make him orange for his Carbon Racers release but didn't do the same for his normal release afterwards.
  • Rip is the only World Grand Prix racer to have never had any speaking lines in the franchise. except the hurting voice of his.
  • Despite him being the rookie of the competition, Rip is actually pretty fast; he was in fifth place in the first part of Tokyo, and the second part, he was in third until he was hit by the pulse generator. In Italy, he was in 10th place, behind Jeff Gorvette and Lewis Hamilton. Then, he drove ahead of them, along with Raoul ÇaRoule. Then after Shu Todoroki collided with Miguel Camino and Max Schnell, he was in 9th place. In London, he was in the last position. Despite that, he was between 4th and 7th place in the one in Radiator Springs.
  • Rip is the only racer in the World Grand Prix not to have a crew chief, just a pit crew consisting of some pitties. However, he does gain a crew chief in the form of a 1:55 scale die-cast character only who did not appear in the film.
  • Mattel selected and planned to make Rip Clutchgoneski as a silver racer along with Nigel Gearsley, Max Schnell, Lewis Hamilton and Miguel Camino in Cars 2, but unfortunately he was cancelled.
  • In Toy Story: That Time Forgot, there is a toy car that bares resemblance to Rip.
  • Rip, despite not appearing in Cars 2: The Video Game, is accesible through mods, there is a mod that comes as a Rip & Lewis expansion pack.
    • there is also a texture mod, but the problem is that Rip's icon in that mod is not working.
